Pinched Nerve Pins and Needles, Symptoms and Treatment

Few steps to survive a pinched nerve

Have you ever felt a burning pain in your wrist? Or pins and needles? Or maybe numbness in your back? Do you think these syndromes are familiar? Then you are having a pinched nerve. Do not worry! If you take some steps it won’t be dangerous at all. Let us first define what a pinched nerve is, know how it can be caused, how it can be treated and the preventive measures that we can take to reduce pinched nerve syndrome.

A pinched nerve can occur due to pressure of any near structure inside your body, this structure maybe bone, tendon, cartilage or soft tissue. It can occur in many places like neck region (cervical region), elbow but one of the most famous examples is the pressure made by a herniated intervertebral disc in the lumbar region of the spine on the sciatic nerve causing burning and tingling pain progressing downward along the leg and this case is named (sciatica). Also another famous example is the carpal tunnel syndrome where the swelled nerve sheath presses on the median nerve causing interruption of its function and inducing pain, it can be caused by the over growth of the bony structure of the carpal tunnel.

A repetitive work, as the work done by workers on assembly line, heavy exercise like weight lifting, bone spur from osteoarthritis, injury and improper body posture are many things that can cause pinched nerve. The over growth of bones must be taken in consideration as one of the major causes of pinched nerve.

Treatment of pinched nerve can be divided into three sections:

  • physical
  • medical
  • surgery

The physical treatment is the first line of treatment for the case. Immobilizing the affected part for a short period of time using a brace is very effective and recovery occurs usually after several days. The usage of a splint in cases of carpal tunnel syndrome is essential because wrist joint is exposed to movement even involuntary during sleep. Physical therapists can advise patients to practice some stretch exercises for the weak part. The physical treatment must be combined with medications that can relief the pain and pressure from the affected nerve. The drug of choice is the (NSAIDs) non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs because they reduce swelling quickly causing the nerve to regain its normal function. There is also a home remedy for pinched nerve.

Sometimes it is essential to undergo surgical operation to relief the pressure. That happens in many cases as if the pressure comes from a herniated intervertebral disc, the surgeon remove the disc to release the nerve or if the pressure comes from a part of the vertebral spines the surgeon can remove the bulging part of the vertebrae. In case of osteoarthritis removing the bone spurs is very useful to relief pain.

Prevention of the pinched nerve is very easy. If you have a job that includes a repetitive routine work like assembling parts on industrial line, you must take several breaks during the day to rest your arms. Doing some stretching exercises can reduce induction of syndrome. As the osteoarthritis is one of the causes so you must protect your joints by keeping balanced body weight. Maintain a good posture while sitting and sleeping. At last we can conclude that the pinched nerve syndrome is made by our own hands so as a result we can stop it by our hands by taking these protective measures in our daily life.
