Burning Pain in Upper Back Muscles and What to Do

Everyone or should I say, just about everyone is going to experience some form of back pain in their lifetime.

What are some of the ways that you can have a burning pain in the upper back muscle is by:

  • A sports injury
  • Overdue some garden work
  • Possibly poor habits

All of these can contribute to having this pain. But there is hope and information on ways to do things that can help give you relief.

What not to do and what to do

Just because you are feeling some burning in your muscles, this is not the time that you just want to lay around and do nothing. Hoping and waiting for the pain to go away.

Now you can do this on your first day, that will be OK, and you might even get away with just resting for a couple days. But if you continue to lay around and hope your back pain is going to go away, your are just going to slow down your recovery.

What you really need to do is to start working those muscles. You need to start stretching and light exercise for your muscles to begin to heal. This is going to help you start to get rid of this burning pain in upper back muscle.

Within a couple to a few days you really need to get off the bed and start to get back into an active lifestyle. You may still be feeling the burn, but it is time to get moving and get some fitness in your life.

Treatments for the burning pain

Some people find relief by some of the following ways whether you are in bed, moving or working:

  • By using heat
  • Try a plug-in heating pad
  • A heat pack that can be warmed repeatedly using the microwave
  • Therapeutic pad that you can stick on your skin and stays warm for 4-6 hours
  • A hot bath
  • Spa

Or you can even use cold to help relieve the muscular pain:

  • Ice
  • Cold pack, chilled in freezer
  • A frozen bag of peas work well, even have two to switch out

Now sometimes this heat or cold can help those painful muscles.

If the pain in the upper back muscles continues or persists, you may have to consider taking some type of medicine such as:

  • Acetaminophen
  • NSAIDS
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Herbal analgesics

What you want to do is try some of these to see if it helps with the pains in the muscles. Now is you are not feeling any relief in those tissue that are bothering you, then it is now time to see your physician. It may be time to have your doctor prescribe narcotics or have a steroid injection.

Light exercise is a must to help the back pain

But you must start to do some light exercise to help with the pain. This is going to help to strengthen your muscles in your back, legs and your stomach. Now you still may be feeling the burning pain in your upper back muscles, a gentle stretching and strengthening exercises is going to help your back and might even feel good.

One other option that you may have would be to visit your chiropractor, masseuse or acupuncture. These all have been found to help with the upper back pain.

Now its time to see your doctor

In a few weeks if the pain has not gone away, you will need to visit your family physician. There are some other things that this burning pain in upper back muscles could be. So there are more complicated things that can be done.

Not all back pain causes can be identified, but remember if your back pain continues you need to visit your doctor for sure to help rule out any other problems that it could be.
